Tea rooms of the Nezu Museum

ねづびじゅつかんのちゃしつ
Tea rooms scattered through the museum garden in Minami-Aoyama. They are rented for tea gatherings, and one room a month is shown to ordinary visitors.

The garden of the Nezu Museum occupies hilly land that Nezu Kaichirō I bought in 1906 because he liked its rolling terrain. He created a garden with the air of a deep mountain valley, placed rustic buildings and tea rooms in it, and in 1913 held a 'garden review' to show the result.

To promote tea and other Japanese arts, the museum lends its garden tea rooms (Kōjin-tei/Buji-an, Ichiju-an/Hikinsai, Ikaruga-an/Seikei-tei, Kanchū-an/Ushibeya) and its auditorium for tea gatherings. Applications are screened for the gathering's public character and the organisers' experience; profit-making use is not allowed. Applications open on the first of the month 13 months ahead for three or more rooms, or six months ahead for two or fewer.

For ordinary visitors, a tea-room viewing of about an hour is held, as a rule, once a month on a Thursday from 3 p.m., showing one room each month. No booking is needed beyond museum admission.
