Shunsō-ro (Tokyo National Museum)

しゅんそうろ
Said to have begun as a rest house built by Kawamura Zuiken during work on the Yodo River; it reached Ueno in 1959 via Sankeien and Yanase-sō.

It began in the Edo period as a rest house built by Kawamura Zuiken (1618–1699) during river works on the Yodo River in Settsu. It was later moved to Osaka, and then by Hara Sankei (1863–1939) to Sankeien in Yokohama.

In 1937 it was moved to Yanase-sō, the Tokorozawa (Saitama) villa of Matsunaga Yasuzaemon (Jian). Yanase-sō was donated to the Tokyo National Museum in 1948, and Shunsō-ro was moved to its present site in 1959.

A single-storey wooden building with a thatched irimoya roof, it has rooms of five and three mats. Its name tablet was brushed by Prince-Abbot Ryōshō of Manshu-in, a noted calligrapher, and was a gift from Sankei to Jian. It can be viewed from outside during garden hours and rented, for a fee, for tea gatherings.

When it was builtWhen it was built

The museum's hire guide dates the building to the Jōkyō–Genroku years (late 17th century), when Kawamura Zuiken built it as a rest house during the Yodo River works. It came into the possession of Matsunaga Yasuzaemon (Jian) in 1936 and was moved to his Yanase-sō estate the following year.
