Back to resultsJo-an
A tea room built by Oda Urakusai, a great tea master from Owari in the formative years of the tea ceremony. Designated a National Treasure in 1936 (under the former law and again under the current one), it is one of the three surviving National Treasure tea rooms, together with Tai-an in Yamazaki and Mittan at Ryōkō-in, Daitoku-ji.
Its exterior is neatly roofed with shingles. Inside is a two-and-a-half-mat daime room; a scale-shaped board inserted beside the alcove creates a diagonal wall, which is why the arrangement is called sujikai no kakoi.
In 1972 it was moved east of Inuyama Castle, and the garden was laid out as close as possible to how it looked in Kyoto. It now stands in the Urakuen Japanese garden, which also holds the former Shōden-in Shoin (an Important Cultural Property), the reconstructed tea room Gen-an and the newer Kō-an, where matcha and sweets are served.
