Back to resultsŌkaku-dai
An Important Cultural Property within Nishi Hongan-ji. It is a raised building with a shingled hipped roof, linked to the National Treasure Hiunkaku by a corridor running west.
Below Ōkaku-dai is a separate bathhouse with a steam bath under a curved gable in its southwest corner and an iron cauldron; the heat was regulated by opening and closing the upper window and board doors. It is not itself a tea room, but the ground floor of neighbouring Hiunkaku includes the tea room Ikujaku, added in 1795 by the tea master Yabunouchi Chikuin and others.
Hiunkaku is normally closed to the public. It is a three-storey pavilion standing in the pond of the Tekisui-en garden in the southeast corner of the grounds, and Ōkaku-dai forms part of that ensemble.
