Shōka-tei
Katsura Imperial Villa was built from around 1615 as a retreat of the Hachijō-no-miya princely house, shaped over some fifty years by Prince Toshihito and his son Prince Toshitada. Four teahouses are set around its stroll garden and pond. Shōka-tei is one of them, set at the point with the widest view in the grounds.
Looking out to distant mountains, it has the feel of a rustic teahouse at a mountain pass. Agency records list the present building as dating from the Shōwa era, a single-storey wooden structure with a thatched roof.
Today it can be seen from outside on the Imperial Household Agency's tour route.
