In its workshop in Gero, Gifu, furniture makers hand-build tatami beds and raised tatami units one at a time, designed to the room in 1 cm steps. It has made many unit tea rooms for the tea ceremony.
For tea-room units the position of the hearth and the direction of the mats are set to the client's wishes, with either an electric or a charcoal hearth. Drawers sized for tea utensils and a step can be ordered, so a room with a hearth can be set up even in an apartment without a tatami room. Frames are made of materials such as laminated ash; one tea-room unit used 64-weave mats.
The company's own hinoki tatami uses Kiso and Tono hinoki from Gifu, processed into tatami cores in its own factory without adhesives or harmful substances; this tatami is Eco Mark certified and has won the Good Design Award and the Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency Award. Raised units and furniture can sometimes be shipped abroad. Suited to those who want an authentic tea-making area at home with little construction.
