Taiyosha Tosou is a painting company founded in 1964 in Tomioka, Gunma. A small team of craftsmen handles general building work such as exterior walls and roofs, and the firm has long joined the local chamber of commerce youth group in painting murals around the town.
Its core technique is a wood-surface finish using kakishibu (persimmon tannin), patented in 2004 (No. 3557407) and selected the same year for Gunma Prefecture's "one company, one technology" program. It gives new wood the calm tone of aged timber without harmful chemicals; the company says it sources its kakishibu from Kyoto.
Using this finish on the interior, the firm developed the Kakisho Koma, a traditional-style assemble-type tea room for the garden. It comes in 3-mat, 4.5-mat and 6-mat sizes, goes together with a cordless driver and wooden mallet, and needs a plot of at least 2.5 m x 4 m. The price covers the kit, tatami and fittings; foundation, delivery and assembly are quoted separately. It also works as a study or annex, suiting anyone who wants a small tea room in the garden without a full build.
About the persimmon-tannin finishAbout the persimmon-tannin finish
Kakishibu is the clear liquid from fermented, aged juice pressed from unripe small persimmons; its tannin is said to resist water, rot and insects. The firm says its method is rot-resistant and antibacterial and can be applied to any wood—posts, beams, ceiling boards, wall panels.
Indoors the colour and sheen deepen over time with no recoating needed (based on indoor results). Work is done at the firm's workshop or on site; prices are quoted by timber and area.
